Your Marketplace Form 1095-A Is Wrong. Who Corrects It Before You File?

The Marketplace that issued Form 1095-A—not the IRS—handles corrections to the coverage information on that form. Before filing, compare the form with your actual coverage and premium records. There is an important exception to a simple “get a corrected form” instruction: The 2025 Form 8962 instructions require you to determine a missing or incorrect second-lowest-cost Silver-plan benchmark in specified situations, without requiring a corrected Form 1095-A for that calculation.
This guide concerns preparation and correction for a 2025 federal return. The IRS’s January 8, 2026 filing-season announcement made early record preparation timely; it did not create a new Form 1095-A correction rule. Use the 2025 Instructions for Form 8962 for the actual reconciliation, rather than applying another year’s credit limits.
Identify the policy and month before changing a tax calculation
Form 1095-A reports Marketplace coverage used to calculate or reconcile the premium tax credit. In Part III, column A generally reports enrollment premiums, column B the applicable second-lowest-cost Silver-plan premium, and column C advance credit payments. Those are different amounts. A bank record showing your out-of-pocket premium does not by itself establish all three.
Check the policy number, covered individuals and coverage months against the enrollment records and notices. Then compare each affected month, rather than only the annual total. A move, a changed household or a different policy can produce more than one form or require a month-specific calculation. Do not discard an additional form merely because it arrived later.
The IRS’s Marketplace statement guidance explains the form’s role. Forms 1095-B and 1095-C describe other coverage information; they are not substitute Marketplace statements for completing the same calculation.
Send the Marketplace a specific correction request
Identify the year, policy, person or month that appears wrong, the amount reported and the record supporting the requested correction. For example, a coverage cancellation notice may support a dispute over a reported month. A premium notice may help explain an enrollment amount. Ask the Marketplace to clarify which information it can correct and how it will provide the replacement form.
Keep the request, supporting records, response and any confirmation number. Do not rewrite the official form or treat an unsupported estimate as a corrected statement. Likewise, an income difference on the tax return does not necessarily mean the Marketplace’s record of advance payments was wrong: Reconciliation compares the advance amount with the credit actually allowed for the year.
Use “CORRECTED” and “VOID” forms differently
If a replacement Form 1095-A is marked CORRECTED, use its information for that policy rather than the original when preparing Form 8962. Retain both versions so the change can be traced. A second form for a different policy is not necessarily a correction of the first one.
A VOID form generally means the earlier form for that policy was issued in error. The 2025 instructions say not to use either the voided form or the earlier form for that policy to complete Form 8962. If you actually had qualifying coverage and believe the void designation is wrong, contact the Marketplace for accurate information rather than decide that the old form remains valid. Instructions, page 2; IRS correction guidance.
A missing Silver-plan benchmark has its own calculation path
The second-lowest-cost Silver-plan premium is a benchmark for the credit, not necessarily the premium of the plan you bought. Column B may be blank, zero or inaccurate when no advance credit was paid or when a change affecting the coverage family was not reported. A zero does not necessarily mean that no credit can be claimed.
The 2025 instructions require determination of the correct applicable benchmark for affected months and state that a corrected Form 1095-A is not required for this purpose. Their “Missing or incorrect SLCSP premium” discussion identifies household changes and moves that can matter. It directs federally facilitated Marketplace enrollees to HealthCare.gov’s tax tool and refers to Publication 974 for the calculation. Instructions, pages 4–5 and 14–15.
Use the source appropriate to the Marketplace and year of coverage. Do not substitute today’s plan price or a friend’s benchmark. Preserve the inputs and result by month. If the correct benchmark differs across months, follow the monthly-line instructions rather than using a single annual figure merely because the policy stayed in force.
If the return is already filed, identify what needs a response
Compare the corrected information with the filed Form 8962 and return to determine whether it changes the result. A change to premiums, advance payments, coverage months or the benchmark can affect tax; an identifying-information correction may not change the calculation. Do not assume that every corrected form requires the same response.
If a voided form was used to claim a credit for coverage reported in error, the IRS correction guidance instructs filing an amended return. If the IRS has already sent a letter requesting reconciliation information, follow that letter’s instructions and preserve its response deadline and submission proof. Filing an unrelated amended return is not a substitute for answering an open request.
Our Walker analysis addresses the separate assessment-procedure dispute that arose after omitted forms were supplied. This page addresses the earlier task: Getting accurate policy information and applying the right calculation before or during return processing. Bring every form version, coverage notice, monthly calculation, filed return and IRS letter to a tax review. A pending Marketplace correction does not itself establish an extension of a tax filing or response deadline.
