Preparing for an Immigration Master Calendar Hearing: A Practical Record Checklist

Review the primary official source.

A master calendar hearing is a preliminary proceeding, but decisions made there can shape the entire removal case. Preparation begins with the Notice to Appear and the court record, not with a generic list of immigration forms.

Verify the hearing and address

Confirm the date, time, court, and whether appearance is in person or remote through an official source. Keep the court and DHS informed of address changes using the required forms. Missing a hearing can have serious consequences; do not rely only on an informal reminder.

Review the charging document

Read every factual allegation and charge. Compare names, entry information, immigration history, and criminal-history assertions with source documents. Prepare to state which allegations and charges are admitted, denied, or require clarification after legal review.

Identify relief and filing needs

List each possible application, eligibility issue, supporting document, fee or fee-waiver question, biometrics step, and translation need. Distinguish relief the immigration judge can adjudicate from a petition or application handled by another agency.

Calendar what follows

EOIR explains that the judge may address representation, pleadings, removability, relief, filing deadlines, and the next hearing. Bring a concise timeline and organized copies. File and serve documents under the applicable Practice Manual rules, and preserve proof of delivery.
